PSA: My can opener broke mid-dinner and I learned a hard lesson
Last Tuesday I was opening a can of Progresso lentil soup for a quick meal and my cheap handheld can opener just snapped in half. The gears stripped and the handle came right off, leaving the lid half attached and jagged. I had to use a knife and pliers to finish the job, which took like 15 extra minutes and almost cut my thumb. Anyone else had a can opener fail on them at the worst time? What backup do you keep around?

15 extra minutes" sounds about right for that knife and pliers method... I'd argue it's more like 20 if you're being careful not to slice yourself open.

I used to think "20 minutes" was an exaggeration until my own can opener broke and I timed myself at 18 minutes with blood and soup everywhere. That was the day I bought a backup manual opener.
