Spent 2 years draining canned tuna wrong before a chef friend corrected me

I used to just dump the whole can in the pan including the water, then wonder why my tuna salad was always mushy. Now I press the lid down and drain it fully before mixing, and the texture change was night and day. Anyone else learn a basic technique way later than they should have?

One of the guys at work swore by draining the can upside down on a paper towel for a minute before mixing. Felt like a pain at first but now I do it every time, cant go back to the watery mess.

3 years ago my friend Brenda tried that trick with a can of flat Coke she was using for a BBQ sauce and she accidentally left it upside down for like 10 minutes. The whole paper towel was soaked through and the drink came out looking MORE watery than before somehow. I swear she never tried it again because she said it ruined the whole sauce.
