That cheap canned beef stew I bought on clearance actually saved my dinner last night

Okay, I'll admit I was totally skeptical about those $1.50 cans of beef stew from the discount grocery in town. I bought three of them six weeks ago just because they were marked down and I was broke. Last night I was too tired to cook anything real so I dumped one in a bowl, microwaved it, and threw some crackers on top. It wasn't fancy but it filled me up and wasn't awful - has anyone else been surprised by a clearance can you usually avoid?

Those clearance cans are basically a gamble every time. Sometimes you get a weird metallic taste, sometimes it's actually edible. Good call on the crackers though, that's the secret weapon for making cheap food feel like a meal. I've had similar luck with the off-brand chili from the dented can bin. The key is keeping your expectations real low.

The metallic taste thing might be overblown though. A lot of times people just expect it to be bad so they find something wrong with perfectly fine soup. Crackers do make everything better, but that dented can chili is usually just fine as is.
