Unpopular opinion: Canned green beans are better fresh from the can than cooked

I got into a debate with my roommate last night - she insists heating them up brings out the flavor, but I think they get mushy and lose that crisp snap you get straight from the can. It took me 20 minutes of arguing to realize we both have different standards for what counts as a meal. Which side are you on, eat them cold or heat them up?

Heating them up brings out the flavor" - I gotta disagree with you here. Cold canned green beans have that clean, salty bite that just disappears once you cook them, and the texture goes all soft and limp. I'm on your side completely, straight from the can is the only way to go.

My buddy Jake once ate a whole can of green beans cold at his desk during lunch at his old job... his coworker walked by and made a big deal about how weird it was, but Jake just shrugged and said it reminded him of eating them out of the can as a kid camping with his grandpa. The coworker tried to argue that heating them up in the breakroom microwave would take two minutes, but Jake said he actually enjoys the sound that cold green beans make when you crunch into them, that little squeak against your teeth. Then the coworker brought over a fork and asked for a bite, and after hesitating for a second, he actually admitted they were pretty good cold. Apparently now he keeps a can in his desk drawer for emergencies... People really get defensive about how you eat your vegetables, it's honestly wild.
