Vent: My buddy said canned tuna is a cop-out, I told him he's missing the point

I was talking with my friend Dave last weekend after a job, and he goes "canned tuna is just lazy cooking." Man that got under my skin. I mean, sure, a tuna sandwich is basic, but he's never tried mixing it with canned corn and a splash of hot sauce over rice. That's a legit 4 minute meal for like $2.50 total. He's eating $15 takeout salads every day and telling me I'm the one cutting corners? Has anyone else had to defend canned food against people who think it's not real cooking?

Buddy of mine swore up and down that canned food was trash until his fridge went out and he ate cold beans straight from the can for three days. Now he keeps a stash "for emergencies" and quietly admits it's not that bad. You doing yours with hot sauce and rice sounds solid, why do people gotta act like every meal needs to be a production?

My buddy Joe did the same thing with canned chili last winter. Power went out for four days and he swore he'd never touch the stuff again. By day two he was eating it cold with a plastic spoon and admitting it beat starvation. That's the thing though. People get caught up in this idea that food has to be some kind of performance. They forget that half the meals our grandparents ate came straight from a can and nobody complained. It's just fuel. Put it in a bowl, add heat or not, and move on with your day.
