Cold emailing a retired exec got me a design contract in 48 hours

Last month I sent a 30-line email to a guy who left the industry in 2019, just asking for feedback on my portfolio, and he forwarded it to his old team who needed freelance help. Has anyone else found that targeting people who are technically retired works way better than current managers?
