Had a chat with a retired exec at a networking event that totally shifted my view on promotions
I was at a bar in Austin last month and this VP from a tech firm told me he turned down three promotions in his career because they would have pulled him away from the actual work he loved. He said 'titles don't pay the bills, but hating Mondays will drain your soul way faster.' Has anyone else ever thought about passing on a promotion for the sake of staying happy in your current role?

Three years ago I turned down a team lead spot because I didn't want to spend my days in sprint planning meetings instead of writing code. Best career decision I ever made, my mental health is way better than my friends who took the management track.

The VP had a point about hating Mondays. 75% of my old team jumped at management roles and now they complain about meetings and performance reviews nonstop. I've watched good engineers turn into unhappy middle managers just for a corner office they barely use. Sometimes staying hands on is the real win.
