I stopped saying yes to every meeting and my workload actually shrank

Two months ago I was drowning in overlapping calls at my marketing job in Austin. So I started declining anything without a clear agenda and asked for the purpose in the invite instead. Turns out half those meetings were just status updates that could have been emails. My boss actually thanked me for being more direct and my deadlines got easier to hit. Has anyone else tried trimming their calendar this way and seen their actual tasks get lighter?

Damn, that is a bold move. So what happens when someone who actually outranks you sends an invite with no agenda, you just decline that too? Cause I feel like that is where it gets tricky. Or do you only do this for the peer level stuff? Also, did anyone get passive aggressive about it in the first few weeks before your boss backed you up?
