Just realized my career path feels like a dead end all of a sudden

I've been working in IT support for about 6 years now. Last month I sat down to update my resume and I couldn't think of a single new skill I'd learned in the last two years. It's all the same tickets, same problems, same solutions. I make $48k a year and I'm pretty sure new hires are starting at the same number. My manager keeps saying there's room to grow but nobody actually gets promoted. I asked him directly about a senior role and he just said "we'll see" which I think means no. Has anyone else run into a job where you get comfortable but then realize you're stuck?

Have you asked your manager directly what the actual requirements are for that senior role, or is it just a vague "keep doing what you're doing" situation? Because if there's a specific cert or skill they need from you, that's different from them just waiting for someone to quit so the spot opens up. What did he say when you pushed for a concrete timeline or checklist?

I used to think getting comfortable in a job was the whole point, but reading this hits different. That "we'll see" is basically manager code for "not gonna happen." You should start looking around, even if it's just to see what's out there.
