My old manager told me to network with competitors... she was right

Back when I was at a small marketing agency in Austin, my manager Linda kept pushing me to go to industry mixers and actually talk to people from rival firms. I thought that was insane, like giving away secrets or something. But I went to a few events last year, made friends with a guy from a bigger agency. Fast forward to 3 months ago when my company did layoffs - he hooked me up with an interview at his place. Not saying it always works, but has anyone else had that awkward thing where advice you ignored ends up being the best move?

Did Linda salt the tip or just straight up say it?

Man, that is rough. I feel for her having to deal with that type of awkwardness. It sounds like Linda just blurted it out without even trying to soften the blow first. I've been in those kinds of conversations where someone just flat out says something and you're left standing there thinking "did they really just say that?" It's not easy being on either side of that moment.
