Question about getting let go after trying to help with training

Last Monday I spent 3 hours training the new guy on our database system, showing him every shortcut I learned over the past 2 years. Friday morning my manager pulled me aside and said I was "overstepping" and putting him at risk, then told me my last day is next week. Has anyone else been punished for doing extra work that nobody else wanted to do?

That "overstepping" line really gets me. In my experience, this is a classic sign of a manager who sees competence as a threat instead of a help. I've seen it happen in at least three different workplaces over the years. The pattern is always the same - someone goes the extra mile, actually helps people learn, and then gets slapped down because it makes the boss look bad or shows up their own lack of knowledge. Your mileage may vary, but I've noticed this tends to happen more in places where bosses are insecure about their own jobs. Take this with a grain of salt, but maybe that new guy will remember your shortcuts long after your manager forgets his own name.

Three workplaces sounds like bad luck, not a pattern.

Buddy of mine got canned for fixing a spreadsheet the boss had been screwing up for months.
