Rant: I spent $800 on a 'career coach' who basically just read my resume back to me
I thought I needed help figuring out my next move, so I paid this guy for three sessions. Each one was just him asking me what I already knew and then repeating it in a fancy way. He told me to 'leverage my network' which I was already doing. The whole thing felt like a script, and I got zero real advice I couldn't find for free online. I'm out that money and feel pretty dumb about it. Has anyone found a good way to actually vet these people before you hand over your cash?

Totally been there. What finally worked was asking for a free 15 minute call first and grilling them on their specific plan for me. I made them tell me exactly what we'd do in the first session, not just vague promises. If they couldn't give a straight answer, I moved on.

Good advice but careful with the "grilling" part. Some good coaches might see that as a red flag and not want to work with you. It's more about having a real talk to see if you click. You want them to be clear on their process, but coming in super aggressive can backfire. A respectful conversation goes both ways.
