The job offer that disappeared when I named my price

Last month in Austin, I got through three rounds for a senior design role at a marketing agency. They loved my portfolio and even mentioned I was the top candidate. I asked for $78,000, which felt fair given my 8 years of experience, but they never replied to my follow-up emails. Has anyone else had a company ghost them after salary talk, or should I have just taken their first number and negotiated later?
