Thought networking events were a waste of time. Was wrong.

For like 5 years I dodged every networking event because I figured it was just people handing out business cards and pretending to care. Then last month my buddy dragged me to this small one in Denver, maybe 30 people tops, at a brewery. I ended up talking to this guy who runs a construction supply company and he mentioned he was looking for a reliable plumbing crew for new builds. I walked out with a contract for 3 houses starting next week, no joke. The thing is, it wasn't about the formal networking part. It was just shooting the shit over beers and realizing someone had a problem I could solve. Has anyone else had a random conversation at an event totally change their workload like that?

Last month I went to a small meetup at a coffee shop, maybe 15 people there, and ended up chatting with a guy who owned a local restaurant chain. He mentioned their kitchen exhaust system kept breaking down and nobody reliable would return his calls. I told him I knew a welder who fixed stuff like that for our place, and he hired me to bring the guy in next week for all three locations.

Three locations in one week for a retired welder. @claire_fisher41 you just turned a coffee chat into a real paycheck. That's the kind of luck that only comes from being in the right place at the right time with the right connection.
