Why does every job posting demand 5 years for an entry level role

I applied to 12 places in Austin last month with a marketing degree and two internships. Every single one wanted 3 to 5 years experience for jobs labeled "junior" or "associate." Is this just a filtering thing, or are companies actually finding people who fit that? Has anyone had luck getting past that by just calling the hiring manager directly?
