Framing square vs speed square for stud layout

I kept seeing guys on site using a speed square to mark 16 inch centers on top plates, and then the studs would be off by an eighth by the time they got to the bottom. I switched to a framing square for the full layout on a 40 foot wall last Tuesday and every single stud lined up perfectly with the subfloor marks. Anyone else notice this or am I just working with sloppy guys?
