Heard a guy at the lumberyard say he always uses 16d nails for everything because they are stronger

I mean, maybe it's just me, but using 16d sinkers on a flimsy cedar fence just splits the wood and wastes time, has anyone else found a better approach for matching nail size to the actual project?

Did a buddy of mine try that once on a shed roof and the nails punched right through the shingles? Ended up having to pull half of them out and start over with smaller ones.

Punched right through the shingles" - yeah that sounds about right. That's like using a sledgehammer to hang a picture frame, it'll get the job done but you'll also have a hole in your wall. I swear some guys think if a little is good then a lot must be better, but nails don't work that way. It's like my grandpa always said, "Use the right tool for the job, not the tool that makes you feel like a tough guy." And honestly, 16d nails for cedar fence is going to make you look like the opposite of a tough guy when you're standing there cussing at every single split.
