I finally get why my uncle was so picky about his miter saw setup

Honestly, I was helping him in his shop in Boise last month and he spent like 20 minutes just dialing in the 45-degree stop. He said, 'If you're off by half a degree on every cut in a frame, you're building a parallelogram, not a rectangle.' Ngl, it clicked for me then how tiny errors stack up. Anyone have a go-to method for checking their saw's accuracy fast?

My old boss in Spokane had a saying. A sixteenth here, a degree there, and your project is kindling. I use a machinist square on the blade and fence first. Then I cut two 45s from scrap and butt them together. Hold them up to a bright light. If you see a sliver of light in the middle, your saw is lying to you.

That light trick @nathan851 mentioned is solid for checking the angle itself, but it won't catch if your blade is out of square to the fence. You gotta check both.
