I think self-leveling compound gets recommended way too often for floors that don't need it

Last month I helped a guy pull up three layers of self-leveler poured over a 1/4 inch dip in his 1950s kitchen floor. A proper sister joist and some planing would have cost half as much and held up better over time. Has anyone else seen this stuff cause more trouble than it solves?

Did they really try leveling compound over a bowed floor joist?

@juliaa25 what did they think the leveling compound was gonna do, magically straighten out the whole floor system?
