Old timer at the lumber yard set me straight on nailing order for framing

I was at Builders Supply in Tucson last spring when this retired framer goes, 'you're nailing that plate wrong.' I'd been doing top-down for like 8 years. He showed me how starting from the bottom and working up stops the wood from splitting. Tried it on a small shed job I had lined up and man, he was right. I still catch myself doing it the old way out of habit though. Anyone else get a tip from a stranger that stuck with you forever?
