Overhang debate cost me a whole deck redo in Austin

Customer insisted on a 2 foot overhang on treated pine, I told him 16 inches max for this span. He pushed back, said his cousin did it in Dallas. Three months later the ends cupped so bad it looked like a wave. I ate the lumber cost, rebuilt it at 14 inches. Anyone else fight clients on basic deflection numbers or just let them learn the hard way?
