Vent: My old miter saw finally gave up the ghost on a big crown molding job

It happened last Tuesday, right in the middle of cutting a tricky 52-inch piece for a dining room in a house over in the Maplewood neighborhood. The motor just made this awful grinding noise and a puff of smoke came out. That saw was a DeWalt DW718 I bought back in 2010, and it's been through everything with me. I remember when I got it, it felt like a spaceship compared to the basic chop saw I used before. Had to run to the big box store and grab a new one to finish the day, but it just isn't the same. The new one is lighter and has a laser, but the fence doesn't feel as solid. Makes you miss the old tools that just worked forever. Anyone have a favorite miter saw these days that can handle the long haul?

Losing a saw like that feels like losing a partner on the job.

A 52-inch crown molding cut sounds absolutely brutal!

Read an article about how older tools were built with heavier duty parts.
