Watched my grandpa's 1962 handsaw go from rust bucket to mirror in one afternoon
My grandpa passed in 2019 and I finally got around to cleaning out his shop in Springfield last weekend. Found his old Disston handsaw hanging on a nail, covered in about 20 years of rust and grime. I almost tossed it but figured I'd give it a shot with some vinegar and a wire brush. Soaked the blade for 2 hours, scrubbed it down, and hit it with some 400 grit wet sandpaper. The difference was wild, the etching on the blade that I couldn't even see before popped right out. Took me maybe 3 hours total and now it cuts straighter than the new saw I paid $65 for last spring. Any of you guys restore old hand tools or do you just buy new and not mess with it?
