Customer asked me to stretch carpet over a hardwood floor seam
Last Tuesday a guy in Tulsa insisted I install plush carpet directly over his old hardwood floor with a half inch gap. He said the carpet would just "squish down" and hide the crack. Has anyone else had a homeowner argue that padding fixes uneven subfloors?

Read this thing online from some flooring forum where a guy said his customer wanted carpet over a warped subfloor that looked like a roller coaster. Said the carpet would "stretch it flat." That's just not how physics works. I had a buddy in Wichita who tried this on a 3/8 inch gap and the carpet ended up looking like a snake that swallowed a rat down the middle of the room. The padding just squishes into the gap at first but then it gets loose over time and starts to ripple.

People do this same thing with so many home repairs. It's like they think if you just ignore the problem and slap something over it the laws of physics will take a vacation. Had a neighbor who tried to hide a sagging porch roof by putting new shingles on top. Ended up with a roof that looked like a sad trampoline. The thing about stuff settling and shifting is it always wins in the end. You can't outrun gravity or moisture or time. It's like trying to hide a crack in your foundation with a new coat of paint. Works for a month then you've got a bigger mess and wasted money on the paint.
