I used to fight loose carpet edges with a knee kicker for hours

For years I was dead set on using a knee kicker for every stretch, even on tricky doorways and closets. Then last summer on a job in a 1980s split-level, the customer's dad showed me a power stretcher trick with a long pole and a carpet shield. He said 'you're killing your knees for nothing, kid.' I tried it that same afternoon and cut my stretch time from 45 minutes to maybe 15. Now I only grab the knee kicker for tiny bathrooms or stairs. Anyone else ditch the knee kicker for certain rooms?

Wavy disaster a week later" sounds like my first attempt at stretching, plus the name of my folk punk band.

Fourteen years in the trade and I still grab my knee kicker for 90% of residential rooms. That power stretcher trick works great on open areas with no obstacles, but in any room with islands, multiple doorways, or weird angles you end up spending more time moving the pole and shield than you save. I've seen guys wreck carpet trying to use a long pole in a narrow hallway or around a corner, getting uneven stretch that leaves a wavy disaster a week later. Plus you can't beat the feel of a knee kicker for gauging tension on the fly, especially on tight carpets like a commercial grade 6-foot. I'll take 45 minutes of controlled stretching over 15 minutes of risky shortcuts that might cost me a callback.
