My old boss in Denver swore by using a 4-inch putty knife for tucking instead of a stair tool.

Tbh I tried it on a tricky berber job yesterday and it actually gave me way more control in the corners. Anyone else have a weird tool swap that just works?

Oh man, I feel silly for lugging around a heavy stair tool all this time! @oliver523, I'm totally trying your drywall knife idea next.

Honestly, that's how the best fixes go. You see someone using a normal tool for a totally different job and it just clicks. It's like using a butter knife to pop open a paint can because the real opener is missing. The simple workaround is always right there.

That's a wild tip. A putty knife is so much thinner and more flexible. Did you find it was easier to get under the backing without catching loops? I've always used a 6-inch knife for smoothing drywall mud, but never thought to try it for carpet. Might have to grab one from the truck.
