My uncle the "expert" told me to stretch carpet with a pry bar, ended up ripping a 12 foot seam

Honestly, is a ripped carpet seam really that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things? Can't you just throw a rug over it?

Did your uncle actually tell you to use a pry bar or did he mean a carpet stretcher? Because those are two completely different tools and one of them is definitely not for pulling carpet tight. Sounds like you just grabbed the wrong tool and blamed the guy who probably meant well. A pry bar is for demo work, not for stretching carpet, that's just common sense.

Yeah honestly I think Eric is kind of missing the point here. I've been there where someone tells you to use a tool and you just grab what you think they mean. Your uncle probably meant well but if he said pry bar and you used a pry bar then you're not completely wrong. But for real, a carpet stretcher or a knee kicker is what you actually need for pulling a carpet tight. I messed up a whole bedroom once using a flat bar instead of a proper stretcher. Ended up having to rent a power stretcher from Home Depot and redo the whole seam. Best advice I can give is just rent a power stretcher for the day, watch a quick YouTube video on how to use it, and save yourself the headache of trying to fix a loose seam later. Way easier than fighting with the wrong tool.
