Rant: That one customer who watched every single cut I made
Had a job last month in a suburb outside Denver where this guy literally pulled up a chair and sat 3 feet from me while I was cutting carpet in his bedroom. He kept saying 'are you sure that measurement is right?' every time I pulled out my tape. Do any of you deal with customers who won't just let you work without hovering?

Take a deep breath and ask them to grab something for you, like a broom or a dustpan from the garage. That gets them out of the room for a minute. Then when they come back, keep talking while you work, ask them questions about the house or whatever. Keeps their mind off the measuring. If they're still hovering, just stop what you're doing and look at them. Say something like "I need to focus on this cut so it's straight, I'll let you know if I need anything" and wait. They usually get the hint. It's awkward but you gotta set that boundary early or they'll be in your way the whole job.
