That 11 year apprentice told me my seams were too tight...

Honestly I thought tight seams were the mark of a pro until this kid pointed out how the carpet was buckling after 3 months. He showed me where my spacing was causing the tufts to pinch instead of relax into the backing. Has anyone else had to loosen up their technique after getting feedback from someone with less experience?

Tight seams are the mark of a pro" - yeah, that was my line too until I had to rip out an entire living room because the carpet looked like a wrinkled bedsheet (at least that's what my wife called it). That young apprentice probably saved you a ton of headache, even if it stung the pride a little. I had a similar moment when a guy half my age showed me I was over-stretching the power stretcher, causing the seams to pop later on. It's humbling to realize the "old school" way isn't always the best way, but man, it beats redoing the whole job for free.

Yeah overstretching causes more problems than tight seams ever did, trust me.
