That cheap seam iron I bought off Amazon cost me double in the long run
I picked up a no-name seam iron for $35 on Amazon last spring thinking I was being smart. It died 3 months later mid-job and I had to borrow a buddy's while waiting for a replacement. The new one cost me $120 and a whole afternoon of lost time on a bedroom install. Anyone else had a cheap tool burn you harder than the savings?

Did you really have to borrow a seam iron from a buddy when you could've just used a clothes iron on low heat to get through the job? That's what I've done in a pinch and it works fine.

People get caught up in trying to find shortcuts for everything these days, but sometimes the tool made for the job is just worth it. I've noticed that pattern with a lot of my buddies who try to fix stuff around the house. They'll spend an hour trying to rig up a clothes iron or a random heat gun instead of just using the right thing for ten minutes. In the long run, borrowing a seam iron from a friend or renting a proper tool saves you from ruining your project or your regular clothes iron. It's like the whole "buy once, cry once" thing applies to borrowing the right gear too.

Oh man, that reminds me of the time I tried to save money on a wet saw blade and ended up chipping three tiles before I gave up and bought the good one. Sometimes the cheap route just costs you twice in frustration.
