TIL that spending $150 on a top-of-the-line knee kicker was the best and worst money I ever spent

So I got tired of borrowing my buddy's old beat up one and figured I'd treat myself... it's that fancy one with the padded grip and the adjustable head. First job I used it on, I knocked a hole in a customer's drywall because I wasn't used to the extra spring tension. Cost me $80 to patch it up and repaint. That thing's been in my truck ever since but I still flinch every time I kick it. Anyone else ever drop big money on a tool that ended up biting you in the wallet?

Actually, "knee kicker" isn't the right term for what you're talking about. That's a carpet stretcher, used for installing carpet, not drywall. You probably meant a manual drywall lift or maybe a drywall T-square, which would make more sense with your story. Either way, dropping real money on a tool and then having it cost you extra on the first job is a rough way to learn its quirks.
