Vent: Overheard a guy at the supply house say carpet tiles are a fad

I was grabbing some seam sealer yesterday and this older installer is telling the counter guy that carpet tiles are just a fad and real carpet will always be better. I wanted to pipe up so bad but I kept my mouth shut. I do a ton of basement and office jobs where tile is the ONLY thing that makes sense. Water damage from a sump pump backup? Just pull up the wet tiles, dry the floor, lay new ones down. Try doing that with broadloom. Plus the waste on a complicated layout is way less with tiles. I can do a 20x30 room with maybe 10 percent waste versus 20 percent with a roll. Has anyone else run into old school guys who just refuse to adapt or is it just my area?

Man I've been there holding my tongue at the counter. But here's the thing those old timers don't get - tiles let you stagger the pattern so seams don't line up with foot traffic lanes, something you just can't do with broadloom when the customer changes their mind on furniture layout after install. I learned the hard way on a church basement where we put broadloom and three months later they wanted a different seating arrangement. Tiles would of saved me a redo. Plus if you get a bad dye lot or manufacturing defect in a roll, you're stuck cutting around it or ordering more and hoping it matches. With tiles you just swap that one bad box back to the supplier.
