Bumped into an old recording engineer who said most of us are storing our tapes totally wrong
He told me heat cycles from garage storage are slowly wrecking the magnetic coating on all my old garage sale finds, and now I'm kicking myself for not keeping them in a climate-controlled closet like he's done for 30 years - anyone else suddenly paranoid about their collection spot?

Basement stays way more stable than a garage year round.

Honestly, I felt that panic hit me the second I read your post. I had a box of old cassettes and reels sitting in my garage for years through every hot summer and freezing winter, and when I finally tried to play them last month, the sound was all warbly and muffled. Ngl, that recording engineer's advice makes total sense to me now, and I'm already moving my stuff to a spare closet in the basement.
