Figured those "audiophile" cassette claims were bunk until a buddy proved me wrong

I always rolled my eyes at people saying $50 blank tapes sound way better than a normal TDK or Maxell. Last month my friend Mark brought over a vintage Nakamichi deck and played me a recording he made on a $60 tape from Japan. I could actually hear more detail in the high end and less hiss, even on my cheap Sony boombox. Has anyone else been surprised by a pricey tape after thinking it was all hype?

I read somewhere that a lot of the magic comes from how the tape itself is made, not just the deck. Apparently those high end cassettes use a different coating formula that grabs the magnetic signal way more evenly. I think there's a guy on YouTube who did a blind test with like ten different blanks and even on a basic Walkman the expensive ones had noticeably less background noise. It's not like night and day but on quieter sections you can definitely pick up more detail without that wash of hiss in the background. Makes me wonder if my old Maxell UR tapes were holding my gear back this whole time.
