Found a $2 cassette deck at a garage sale that cleaned my tapes better than my fancy one

Been using this nice Sony deck my uncle gave me for like 7 years now. Thought it was fine. Grabbed a cheap Panasonic at a garage sale for 2 bucks just for the looks. Hooked it up and all my old tapes sounded way clearer. Turns out the pinch roller on my good deck was dried out and slipping. Never woulda checked that. Anyone else ever had an old cheap player outdo your main one?

Honestly that makes total sense because people don't think about the mechanics of these things they just assume newer is better. I had a similar thing happen with a walkman I bought for 50 cents at a thrift store it played my old mix tapes way better than my expensive portable player. The issue was the felt pad on my good player had worn down over time and wasn't pressing the tape against the head right. You gotta remember that a lot of those older budget decks were built simpler but sometimes that means less that can go wrong if that makes sense. Plus the pinch roller thing is super common and people never check it until something sounds off. So yeah you probably stumbled onto a little hidden gem that just works better because it hasn't been used as much.

Oh man, that reminds me of my buddy Mike. He found an old Emerson boombox at a flea market for like 5 bucks and it made all his scratched up punk tapes sound brand new compared to his fancy Pioneer deck.
