My 1987 mixtape sounded like mud until I swapped one little thing

I bought a beat up Maxell mixtape at a garage sale in Dayton last month for 50 cents and it played like garbage, all muffled and dull. Turned out my deck's head was filthy and after a 2 minute clean with a Q-tip and rubbing alcohol the same tape sounded bright and clear. Has anyone else had a thrift store tape that only needed a good deck cleaning to come back to life?
