My friend told me my mixtape had too much dead air between songs

I used to leave like 5 seconds of silence between tracks because I thought it gave the tape room to breathe, but he said it made the flow feel broken and amateurish. After he pointed it out I went back and trimmed all my gaps down to about 1.5 seconds and the whole thing just snaps together way better now. What's your rule for spacing between songs on a mix tape, do you prefer tight cuts or some silence?

That's the same thing I noticed with podcasts. People leave dead air thinking it's professional silence but it just kills the energy. Tight cuts keep people locked in whether it's music or conversation.

Is it really that big of a deal though? I mean, I get what you're saying about podcasts, but sometimes a little quiet can be good. Like, when someone's thinking about a heavy topic, a second of silence actually helps me process what they just said. If you cut everything too tight, it feels rushed and fake, like you're just speed-running the conversation. Plus, some of the best moments in music are the pauses, like in a live album where the crowd goes quiet before a big drop. But I'm probably overthinking it, haha.
