Picked up a box of old tapes at a garage sale last Saturday for $5
I was digging through a pile of junk at a garage sale in Akron last weekend and found a box of maybe 30 sealed blank cassettes. The guy said they'd been sitting in his basement since 1987. I popped one open and the tape itself looks brand new, no mold or warping. Has anyone else found old stock like this and actually used them for recording?

My dad had a box of those in his closet since the 80s and they all sounded terrible when I tried them a few years back. The magnetic coating can go bad even if the plastic looks fine. I'd say save yourself the headache and just use them for arts and crafts or something.

I don't know man, I've got a few old tapes from the 90s that still sound decent enough for the occasional listen. Maybe your dad's were just stored in a hot garage or something lol. Feels like people on here act like old tape is automatically trash, but it's not that big of a deal.
