PSA: Don't bring your rare tapes to a house party... learned this the hard way

Last Saturday I took my mint copy of The Replacements' "Let It Be" over to a friend's place in Austin for a listening hang. Four songs in, someone spilled a whole modelo on my deck lid and the J-card got completely soaked... I tried to dry it with a paper towel but the ink started bleeding everywhere. The tape itself still plays okay but the artwork is wrecked and it's worth way less now. I should have known better than to bring something that valuable into a crowd of drunk people. Now I only take dupes or cheap thrift finds to gatherings like that. Has anyone else had a tape ruined at a social thing?

Damn dude, that really sucks, I feel for you. Nothing hurts like watching a rare piece get wrecked right in front of you, especially something as good as "Let It Be". I've been there myself with a first press of a Dead Kennedys 7" at a backyard bbq, someone knocked over a whole pitcher of iced tea on it. The cover was basically just a stain at that point, and I still get mad thinking about it. Everybody thinks they're being careful until someone gets too drunk and clumsy, it's always a gamble bringing the real gems out.
