That time my car ate my favorite mixtape on I-70

Was driving back from a swap in St. Louis last summer. Had a 90-minute tape I recorded off the radio, every song in perfect order. Deck jammed halfway through side B, pulled the cassette out and the tape was a knotted mess. Spent the next hour in a gas station parking lot with a pencil and a lighter. Saved maybe 20 minutes of it, the rest was garbage. Still keep it in my glove box as a reminder to always make a second copy. Anyone else have a tape get chewed up in a bad moment?

Did you actually try the pencil trick with the tape itself, or did you just use it to wind it back up? Because I've had decks eat tapes before, and sometimes the tape gets folded over on itself so bad that no amount of careful winding saves it. That lighter part sounds risky though, I've definitely melted a cassette shell trying to smooth out a crease with heat. Was the 20 minutes you saved all from side A, or did you luck out and keep the best part of side B?
