Why I stopped using type II tapes for recording

I used to only record mixtapes on type II cassettes because everyone said they sounded better. Then I got a deck from 1987 at a thrift store in Portland and noticed my old type I tapes actually had less hiss on it. Has anyone else found that older decks treat type I better than the hype suggests?

Totally agree with @faithbaker about older decks sounding better with type I... my 87 deck made me realize the same thing. It's like how people get all worked up about buying organic vegetables, but then you find out the regular ones from the farmers market actually taste better because they're fresher. The hype around type II tapes just made everyone assume they were better, but sometimes the simple old tech works just fine if the machine is built for it. My buddy swears by his top of the line 90s Denon for type II, but his 70s Pioneer plays type I so clean you'd never know the difference.

My 84 Pioneer sounds WAY better with type I tapes, total game changer.
