Always thought flaxseed oil seasoning was overhyped until I tried it on my old #8 skillet

After 6 months of using Crisco and getting so-so results, I figured what the heck and gave flaxseed a shot - that first egg slide sold me. Anybody else sworn by one method for years and had their mind changed by something totally different?

Went into flaxseed thinking it was just internet hype. Used vegetable shortening for years and got decent results but nothing that really wowed me. Tried flaxseed on my grandmother's old pan and the difference was night and day. That first seasoning layer came out hard and smooth, eggs just floated on it. Makes me wonder what else I've been missing out on because I stuck with the same old habit too long.

Whoa, okay so here's a weird thing nobody talks about. The actual sound the pan makes when you slide an egg off a well-seasoned flaxseed surface versus a Crisco one. With Crisco I always got this sticky scraping noise even when nothing stuck, you know? But that first time with flaxseed, the egg just... glided with this quiet smooth hiss. It's like the seasoning physically changed the pan's texture on a micro level (and my ears can tell the difference even if my eyes can't). Kinda spooky but also super satisfying.
