Burnt my seasoning off trying to sear, fixed it with a potato
Last Thursday I cranked my 12 inch skillet way too hot on the gas grill and the whole surface turned gray and sticky. The seasoning just peeled off in patches after I scraped it with a metal spatula. I scrubbed it down with chainmail and warm water, then did a thin layer of canola oil and heated it upside down in the oven at 450 for an hour. The trick that saved me was rubbing a raw potato half with salt over the sticky spots first, it lifted the gunk without stripping the pan. Has anyone else used potato to rescue a rough seasoning job, or is that just my weird shortcut?
