Finally got the seasoning right on my old skillet after 3 tries

I kept seeing people online say to use flaxseed oil for seasoning, so I tried it on my grandmother's skillet. After two rounds the seasoning flaked off in the sink when I washed it. I asked a guy at a farm supply store and he said to just use plain vegetable oil and heat it longer. I did that last Saturday with three thin coats at 400 degrees and now the pan is slick as glass. Has anyone else had trouble with fancy oils not sticking?

Flaxseed oil ruined two of my pans too... stuck with plain Crisco ever since and it works perfect. Good to hear yours turned out slick in the end.

Honestly, I used to be all in on flaxseed oil, thought it was the only way to get that perfect nonstick finish. Then I tried it on a cheap pan and it turned all sticky and gross, just like you said. Tbh, it totally changed my mind, now I just use plain vegetable oil for everything. Nice to hear yours came out slick in the end, @simonbell, that gives me hope for my next try.
