Hot take: baking soda plus a 20 minute soak saved my rusted pan from the trash
My 12 inch skillet sat in the garage for 6 months and came out looking orange and dead. I tried scrubbing it with steel wool for 40 minutes and the rust just laughed at me. A guy at the hardware store in Boise told me to soak it in warm water with half a box of baking soda for 20 minutes first. The rust wiped right off with a sponge, no gouges in the metal, and I reseasoned it that same night. Has anyone tried this on a really deep pitted pan, or does it only work on surface rust?
