Just realized people are using soap wrong on cast iron
I saw a guy at a campout last weekend scrubbing his skillet with dish soap like it was a regular pan. The soap is fine if you use a tiny drop and rinse quick, but he lathered it up and let it sit for 5 minutes. Has anyone else seen someone totally overdo it with soap?

I heard once that soap was the devil on cast iron, but times have changed.

Nah you're right, a little soap won't hurt if it's well seasoned. People used to act like it'd strip the whole pan down to bare iron.

It's like everything else in life, people get stuck on some old rule and treat it like gospel. My dad still won't put tomatoes in his cast iron because he heard it once from his grandfather. Meanwhile I've been deglazing with wine and scrubbing with soap for years and my pans are fine. Same thing with washing your jeans or not putting knives in the dishwasher. Someone says something once and it just sticks around forever.
