My aunt's 10 minute demo fixed my stripping routine

Last spring my aunt visited and saw me scrubbing a crusty skillet with steel wool for 20 minutes. She grabbed my chainmail scrubber and just worked it in circles with a little warm water, no soap at all. Within 5 minutes the crust was gone and she said, 'You're fighting the pan, not cleaning it.' I tried her method on two older pans that same week and both came out smoother than ever. Has anyone else had a relative show them a simpler trick that made you feel silly for missing it?
