Oven cleaner stripped my pan, now it looks gray and chalky

So I finally got brave enough to strip this Lodge skillet I found at a garage sale in Columbus last month. It had like 4 layers of old crusty seasoning and I read online that the yellow cap Easy-Off trick works great. I sprayed it down, bagged it, left it outside for 24 hours. Woke up this morning, rinsed it off, and the black coating came off mostly but now the iron looks gray and kinda chalky. I scrubbed with steel wool and it's smooth, no rust yet, but I'm second guessing if the lye ate into the metal or something. Did I do the steps wrong or is that just how bare iron looks before you reseason? Also, is it normal for the pan to smell a bit like chemicals after rinsing even with soap? Has anyone else had this happen and did your pan turn out fine after a few rounds of seasoning?
