Overheard my neighbor say soap ruins cast iron, almost spit out my coffee
I was out back grilling some chicken thighs last Saturday and my neighbor, Tom from three doors down, was telling his buddy that you can never use soap on cast iron because it'll soak in and ruin the seasoning. I just stood there with my tongs in the air, trying not to laugh. Look, I've been using a dab of Dawn on my Lodge skillet for like 5 years now and my eggs slide right off. Has anyone else had to politely correct someone on this old myth without sounding like a know-it-all?

Just laughed and offered to cook him breakfast on my pan.

Hang on, is this really something to get worked up over? I mean Tom's just grilling with his buddy in the backyard, not teaching a masterclass on cookware. If his eggs are still coming out fine then who cares what soap he uses or doesn't use? Idk, it sounds like one of those things where people get way too precious about their pans. Maybe it's just me but I've never understood the whole "cast iron is sacred" thing with strict rules and all.
