Rant: The $60 chainmail scrubber I bought was a total waste
I kept hearing about how chainmail scrubbers are the gold standard for cleaning cast iron, so I bought one for $60 on Amazon last month. After three weeks of use, it's scratching up my seasoning worse than the rough sponge I was using before. Anybody else find chainmail overrated, or am I just doing it wrong?

A buddy of mine who restores old cast iron pans actually warned me about this exact thing. He said the cheaper chainmail scrubbers are hit or miss because the rings can have rough edges that act like mini sanders on your seasoning. He swears by the ones with smoother, thicker rings, but even then he only uses it for stubborn stuck-on bits, not for every clean. Your mileage may vary on the return policy if it's still within the window.

The cheap ones are definitely the problem, not the concept. Those rough edges will tear up seasoning way faster than a sponge ever could.
